Weekly Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We are sending a parent permission slip home for our field trip that is on Friday, May 11th.  Every child must have a signed form to go on the field trip.  We would prefer that everyone bring their own disposable sack lunch.  Students may order a disposable sack lunch from the school cafeteria, but it MUST be ordered no later than April 25th.

So far, I have one parent that has committed to riding the bus and chaperoning our class on the field trip.  This person will ride the bus with us and have their way paid.  I do have one other parent that will chaperone but would prefer to drive and pay their own way.  I still need three more parent volunteers for our class.  Please email me if you can chaperone.

Reading: This week’s story is a fantasy titled The Mysterious Tadpole.  We will also be reading an informational text called From Eggs to Frogs.  During the reading this week we will be focusing on story structure, drawing conclusions, inferring, and predicting.

Spelling: Words with oo, ew, ue, ou.

The spelling words are located on the back of the newsletter.  Please practice the spelling words with your child so they will be ready for the test on Friday.

Grammar: Students will be working with contractions and words that have multiple meanings.

Math:  We are starting a new unit titled Linear Measurement.  We will start with nonstandard units of measurement and then move toward standard units of measurement.

Writing:  Informational Writing and a response poem.

Character Trait:  Perseverance.

The perseverance character trait assembly will be on April 27th at 3:05.

Speeches:  This week’s topic is to tell about your favorite thing or event that happened this year at school.   Next week’s topic is to share about a book you read.  Who are the main characters and what was the setting?  Describe the plot.

April Birthdays: Carson, Nathan, Caleb, and Blayne.   Our April birthday celebration will be on Friday, April 27th.  Please let me know if you would like to provide treats for the celebration.

Reminders:

  • Students’ weekly 100 minutes of reading are due no later than next Monday.
  • Discovery Center/Nature Center field trip will be May 11th.
  • Field day is scheduled for June 1st.
  • The talent show will be on June 5th.
  • School Carnival will be June 6th

Sincerely,
Kim Emerson

Portfolios!

Throughout the year I have been saving samples of your child’s work. I would like to offer the opportunity for students to create a portfolio of their second grade work. If this is something you would like your child to create, please send in a one-inch three ring binder by April 13th.
